I had a read of How Big Things Get Done” by Bent Flyvbjerg and Dan Gardner.  It is a fantastic resource of anecdotes and real world stories on the triumphs and failures of big and small projects.  It’s well worth the read.

One of my favourite quotes is

“Planning is a safe harbour. Delivery is venturing across the storm-tossed seas.”

Given my background I love a sea based analogy! Here is my breakdown of the quote and what it means to me in my pursuit of Delivery Excellence. 

While careful planning is essential, true success lies in navigating the unpredictable waters of delivery.  Adaptability and resilience are paramount.

The Safe Harbour (Planning)

Meticulous planning provides a sense of control and security, allowing us to map out the course and anticipate potential obstacles.  It helps us define scope, allocate resources, and establish clear goals, creating a roadmap for our journey. However, in the ever-shifting landscape of technology, even the most comprehensive plans can be disrupted by unforeseen challenges.

Storm-Tossed Seas (Delivery)

Delivery is where the oars meet the sea, where plans are put to the test and true value is created.  It’s a dynamic environment with shifting requirements, unexpected roadblocks, and the need for rapid decision-making.  Just like navigating a ship through stormy seas, digital delivery demands agility, courage, and a willingness to adjust course when necessary.

Essential Navigation

To navigate the turbulent waters of delivery, we need the right tools and strategies.  Embracing agile and just in time delivery allows us to adapt to change quickly and respond to emerging needs.  Effective communication and collaboration ensure everyone is aligned and working towards a common goal.  Continuous learning helps us stay ahead of the curve and adapt to new technologies and approaches.

Success in the Open Waters

Successfully navigating the challenges of delivery brings a profound sense of accomplishment.  But more than just reaching the destination, it’s about embracing the journey, learning from every storm we weather, and emerge stronger and more capable.
